World champions Spain produced a dramatic comeback at Wembley on Saturday, beating England 3-2 in their opening UEFA Nations League match and extending their record unbeaten run to 39 games.

Spain made a flying start when Lamine Yamal capitalised on a mistake from Marc Guéhi to put the visitors ahead after just two minutes. Spain continued to create chances, but England gradually found a way back into the contest.

Anthony Gordon levelled in the 36th minute after a quick counter-attack involving Jude Bellingham. Four minutes later, England moved in front when Harry Kane’s header found the net after Nico O’Reilly delivered the ball into the area, with the effort taking a deflection off Marc Cucurella.

England had an opportunity to extend their lead early in the second half after Bellingham was brought down inside the penalty area. Kane, however, was unable to convert from the spot after slipping during his attempt, with the ball hitting the crossbar before the striker was penalised for a double touch.

Spain took advantage of the missed opportunity. Substitute Álex Baena restored parity in the 60th minute with a composed finish from outside the area.

The comeback was completed in the 74th minute when Mikel Oyarzabal produced a precise finish over England goalkeeper James Trafford to make it 3-2. Oyarzabal had also scored Spain’s winning goal against England in the Euro 2024 final.

The victory extends Spain’s unbeaten run to 39 consecutive matches, a record for a European national team. The result also gives Luis de la Fuente’s side an early advantage in League A, Group 3.

Elsewhere in the Nations League, Croatia began their campaign with a 2-1 victory over Czechia in Prague. Luka Modrić opened the scoring before Adam Karabec equalised for the hosts, while substitute Marco Pašalić scored the winner in the 77th minute.

Switzerland also started with a convincing win, defeating North Macedonia 3-0 in Skopje. Remo Freuler opened the scoring before Zeki Amdouni added two goals to complete the victory.
