Pako Browser v2.2.2: Nepal’s Browser for Everyday Use

Pako Browser just shipped version 2.2.2, the most complete release we’ve built so far. If you’ve been following Niguro’s work, you know we’ve always believed the tools Nepali people use every day should be built with Nepal in mind. Pako is that belief, inside a browser.

This article covers what Pako is, what v2.2.2 ships, what makes it different from Chrome, Edge or Brave, and where it’s headed.

What is Pako?

Pako is a free, private web browser built by the Niguro team for Windows 10 and 11. It runs on Chromium the same engine behind Chrome, Edge, Brave and Opera, so every site you already use works identically. Nothing breaks. Nothing needs relearning.

What’s different is everything built around the engine: a Nepal-first new tab, an offline Bikram Sambat calendar, festival countdowns, Nepali news from 15+ sources, ad and tracker blocking, a local password vault, a media grabber, and a privacy posture where your data stays on your device structurally, not just as a promise.

Pako ships with Niguro as the default search engine, and you can add or switch to Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo or Startpage any time in Settings.

What’s new in v2.2.2

This release is focused on three things: making daily browsing smoother, fixing the small annoyances, and hardening what’s already there.

Address bar is ready when you are

Open a new tab or press Ctrl+T and the cursor lands in the address bar immediately. No extra click. You start typing, Pako navigates or searches. This sounds small until you use it for a week and everything else feels slow.

Incognito is actually private now

Ctrl+Shift+N opens a private window with its own temporary profile no profile switching, no account options, no history saved. When the window closes, everything in it is gone. Third-party cookies remain blocked by default.

Navigation diagnostics

When a site fails to load, Pako now logs exactly why the URL, the HTTP status, the WebView2 error code and the network state so the cause is visible instead of mysterious. The “site unreachable” page now explains what went wrong in plain language rather than showing a dead end.

NEPSE market card

The new tab now includes a live NEPSE card showing the index, change, and turnover pulled from the same source Niguro uses on niguro.com/nepse. Data refreshes every 30 minutes with graceful empty states when the market is closed.

NRB exchange rates, gold, silver & fuel prices

Live exchange rates (USD, INR, EUR, GBP), gold and silver prices from local markets, and fuel prices from NOC all cached on device and refreshed at 11 AM Nepal time. No waiting for a page to load; the data is there the moment you open the new tab.

Pako Jobs

A curated jobs and internships section built specifically for Nepal’s job market. Starting as a focused launcher with handpicked Nepali companies and career pages growing into an aggregated feed as we build the backend.

Download manager improvements

Clicking “See More” on downloads opens in a new tab instead of burying your current page. Right-click “Save Image As” now lets you choose where to save. Download progress shows visually and the download dropdown opens automatically when a download starts.

Profile switching without duplicates

Switching to a profile that already has a window open brings that window to the front instead of spawning a duplicate. One profile, one window unless you intentionally want two.

Nepali interface language

Full Nepali (नेपाली) UI translation menus, settings, new tab, sidebar, dialogs, everything. Switch from the Settings page and the entire browser flips instantly. Default follows your Windows language setting.

Security updates

Bundled Chromium runtime: 152.0.4191.62. Verified against Microsoft’s security releases before shipping. Every Chromium patch we receive from the upstream pipeline ships to Pako users the same cycle that keeps Edge secure.

What Pako already does the full picture

v2.2.2 builds on a feature set that’s already more complete than most people expect from a browser by a Nepali company:

• Nepali Calendar (Bikram Sambat) — Full offline BS calendar with AD↔BS conversion, festival countdowns, tithi, nakshatra, sunrise/sunset and public holidays. Same engine as niguro.com/miti.
• Nepali News — Aggregated from 15+ Nepali sources. Filterable by language (Nepali/English), region, and category. Refreshed hourly.
• Spaces — Separate browser profiles with their own bookmarks, history, passwords, cookies and settings. Work never mixes with personal. Each space gets its own accent color and theme.
• Ad & Tracker Blocking — Built-in, toggleable, with live counts of what’s blocked. Disable per-site when you need to.
• Password Vault — Locally encrypted, autofill on supported sites. Never synced unless you opt in later. Never in incognito.
• Media Grabber — Paste a link, save as MP4 or MP3. YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, X, Reddit, Facebook, Vimeo, SoundCloud and 1000+ sites. Quality selection up to 4K.
• Pako Notes — A scratchpad in the sidebar that saves as you type. No account, nothing uploaded.
• Clipboard Intelligence — Copy a phone number, currency amount, or date and get context-aware right-click actions: convert, translate, or open the right tool.
• Theme System — Light, dark, or system. Custom accent colors. Wallpaper mode. The whole browser follows your choice, including internal pages.
• Unit Converter & Tools — Word counter, AD↔BS converter, Base64/URL encoder, Nepal land area converter — tools that work offline.
• Usage Dashboard — See your daily browsing time, top sites, and focus sessions. All local, never uploaded.

How Pako is different

The honest comparison isn’t “Pako vs Chrome” it’s “Pako vs the other Chromium browsers.” Edge, Brave, Opera and Vivaldi all made the same engine choice. The competition is about what’s built around it.

Privacy is structural, not a promise

Pako never receives your browsing data. Your history, bookmarks, passwords and notes live in plain local files on your PC. There’s no analytics SDK, no tracking code, no crash reporting of our own. The single call Pako makes on its own is an anonymous version ping version number only, no identifier, no browsing data named on the Security page so you can verify it. We disabled Microsoft’s SmartScreen URL checks and crash reporting by default, and we publish exactly what’s left.

Nepal is core, not a sidebar

No global browser will ever ship a Bikram Sambat calendar, care about Dashain countdowns, show NEPSE data on the new tab, or aggregate Nepali news from local sources. Pako treats these as daily-use features because they are. When you open Pako in the morning, you see today’s BS date, the weather in Kathmandu, NEPSE’s opening move, and the top stories from Nepal. That’s not a novelty that’s a browser that knows where you are.

Light on your machine

Tab sleeping suspends background tabs to save RAM. Ad and tracker blocking cuts page weight. There’s no account system or background sync service running on your PC. Pako doesn’t phone home to sync your data because it never has your data to sync.

Transparent

Public changelog. Published engine versions. A security release process. Honest limits documented including what we can’t do yet. Trust should be checkable, not promised.

Built for everyday use not as a demo

Pako v2.2.2 is the version where we’re making the case that a Nepali browser can be a daily driver. Not a side project, not a “try it once” experiment the browser you open every morning and keep open all day.

That means the new tab has to be useful, not decorative. The calendar has to be correct, not approximate. The search has to be fast, the pages have to load, the downloads have to work, and the privacy has to be real. We’ve tested all of these across the 2.2.x cycle, and v2.2.2 is the release where they’re all solid.

We’re also building for where this goes next. The infrastructure for optional data sync settings, bookmarks, passwords is designed so you’d have to explicitly opt in, with your data encrypted end-to-end. That’s a future feature, not a shipped one. But the architecture is in place.

What’s coming next

Pako v2.2.2 is not the finish line. Here’s what’s on the roadmap:

• Optional Niguro Sync — Settings, bookmarks and passwords synced across your devices, encrypted, opt-in only.
• Nepali AI Assistant — Context-aware AI built around Nepal, using free and open models. Answer questions about Nepali law, land, festivals, government services in Nepali.
• Nepal Maps — Local-first mapping with bus routes, traffic, and points of interest.
• Nepali Voice Input — Type in Nepali using your voice, directly in the browser.
• Jobs Aggregator — Automatic collection from career pages, RSS feeds, and job APIs, with trend signals from Google Trends.
• Multi-platform — From v4.0.0, Mac, Android and more platforms to bring Pako to every device.
