Kathmandu could soon stay open around the clock, with officials discussing a plan to run the whole city 24 hours a day, not just its tourist hub of Thamel.
Chief District Officer Ishwari Prasad Paudel said the District Administration Office is studying the idea and has already begun talks with the Prime Minister's Office and the Home Ministry. He was speaking at a discussion on peace and security in Thamel organised by the Thamel Tourism Development Council on Friday.
Paudel said the government is working to develop Thamel as a tourist centre, and that support from landlords and business owners will be needed to control illegal activity in the area.

Senior Superintendent of Police Suresh Prasad Kafle, chief of the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office, said traffic police would support making Thamel a vehicle-free zone if local people and business owners agree. He added that action would be taken against haphazard parking.
Senior Superintendent of Police Dilip Ghimire, chief of the District Police Office Kathmandu, said the cooperation of landlords and business owners is also needed to make Thamel safe.
