Vowel signs (matra) — combine with a consonant
How to type Nepali here
Nepali Unicode stores each syllable as its own character: a consonant such as क plus a vowel sign such as ा makes का. So नेपाल is typed as न + े + प + ा + ल, and the vowel signs sit in the second-to-last row above. This is exactly the order you see in the keyboard, which is why the matras are grouped together rather than spread across the letters.
The virama (्) mutes the vowel built into a consonant so two consonants can join — क + ् + ष gives क्ष, the same shapes grouped as क्ष त्र ज्ञ श्र in the third row for one-tap entry.
If you would rather type phonetically in English letters and have it come out in Devanagari, the Nepali typing tool does that. This keyboard is for when you know the exact letters you want, and everything you type stays in your browser.
