Martha Stewart responds after backlash over her Halloween costume
Martha Stewart has spoken out after her Halloween costume sparked backlash online.
She dressed up as a homeless person for Halloween, sharing a photo of herself in ripped-up clothing with dirt on her face.
The photo showed her carrying a sign that read, "I am hungry. Help me."
Critics on Reddit called the costume offensive and out of touch, and Stewart deleted the photo soon after posting it.
In a statement to Page Six on Sunday, she said she was distressed that the costume offended people, which was never her intention.
She said she meant the costume to bring more awareness to homelessness, which she called one of America's greatest challenges.
Stewart added that she cares deeply about the issue, has spent a lot of time supporting charities that work on it, and is committed to continuing to make a difference.
She also described Halloween as one of her favorite holidays of the year.
