US President Donald Trump has discussed resuming military action against Iran with his national security team, holding meetings at the White House on Wednesday and Thursday.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Trump said the United States would soon decide whether further strikes are needed to permanently end Iran's nuclear programme.
He said he would prefer not to destroy what remains of Iran, but added that he may have to do so if necessary.

Trump had earlier warned that Iran's remaining military capacity, energy infrastructure and bridges could be targeted, and said rebuilding the country could take 25 years.
US Central Command has finalised preparations to resume major military action against Iran, but is still waiting for formal direction from the White House.
On 8 October, Trump said there would be no attack on Iran before the midterm elections on 3 November. Since the elections, rising fuel prices and falling public support for war have made further military action a political challenge for his administration.
Iraq's Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi told Trump in a telephone call on Thursday that Iraq's territory would not be used to attack a neighbouring country, and urged respect for the sovereignty of all nations, his office said.
