No Power Shortage Expected on Laxmi Puja Evening as Demand Nears 1,700 MW
Lights shine over Kathmandu as the country marks Tihar.

The Nepal Electricity Authority says there will be no shortage of electricity on the evening of Laxmi Puja, which falls tonight during Tihar. Peak electricity demand across the country is expected to reach about 1,700 megawatts this evening, according to the authority.

The authority says electricity produced within the country is enough to meet that demand. Production is projected to be about 800 megawatts above demand, leaving a clear margin between the power available and the power expected to be used. In other words, supply is expected to stay well ahead of use throughout the evening.

That margin means the system is expected to have more power available than users are likely to need at the busiest time of the evening. The authority gave the assurance before the evening peak, so households can plan for the night with the supply position made clear in advance.

Demand on the night of Laxmi Puja has risen steadily in recent years, according to the authority. Last year, peak demand on Laxmi Puja day reached 1,650 megawatts. This year, the expected peak of about 1,700 megawatts is higher than the figure recorded last year, continuing the recent upward trend.

The authority has also made maintenance arrangements in case they are needed. Those arrangements are intended to support the supply system during the evening and to help deal with any problems that may arise while demand is at its highest.

With domestic production expected to exceed demand by a clear margin and maintenance arrangements in place, the authority says there should be no shortage of electricity on Laxmi Puja evening.
