Dr Govinda KC, the doctor whose hunger strikes have repeatedly brought Nepal's medical education debate into public focus, is being brought to Kathmandu after his health worsened during his latest fast in Ilam.
A helicopter left Kathmandu for Ilam to collect him, and Ilam Hospital said he will receive treatment at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital.
Doctors examining him found that the glucose level in his blood had fallen sharply, while the level of acetone in his urine had risen. They said his condition was becoming complicated and that further and specialist treatment was now needed. KC is a patient with type-2 diabetes, which makes a prolonged fast especially risky for him.

KC began his 25th satyagraha last Thursday at the Narayansthan temple premises in Ilam, pressing demands for reform in medical education and the health sector. After health problems appeared, he was admitted to Ilam Hospital on Friday night.
Satyagraha, a peaceful protest through fasting, has been KC's chosen method for years, and his fasts have repeatedly put medical education reform on the national agenda. Every serious turn in his health has drawn wide public concern.
The transfer to Kathmandu now puts his treatment in the hands of a larger teaching hospital, and his condition there will be closely watched in the days ahead.
