A clash broke out during the Nepali Congress regional convention in Morang Constituency No. 6 on Wednesday, September 30, disrupting the nomination process and leaving several party leaders and workers injured.

The incident occurred at the Sigdel Bandhu Coordination Pratisthan in Sundarharaicha-4 as preparations were underway for the nomination of candidates under the party’s 15th General Convention. The convention process was subsequently affected and its further proceedings remain uncertain.

Among those reported injured were acting regional president and former lawmaker Chum Narayan Tabadar and Congress leader Chet Raj Regmi. Nepali Congress Joint General Secretary Dila Sangraula was also reportedly subjected to physical assault during the incident. Several injured leaders and workers were taken to Nobel Medical College in Biratnagar for treatment, according to local reports.

Dispute over active membership

The confrontation reportedly began amid a long-running dispute over the distribution and verification of active party memberships in Morang-6.

According to reports, disagreements over membership had already delayed the ward-level convention in the constituency. The dispute resurfaced as the regional convention was being prepared, eventually escalating into clashes and property damage at the venue.

Congress leader Dila Sangraula alleged that some people arrived at the venue carrying iron rods and attacked Tabadar and others. She claimed that Tabadar was assaulted first inside a vehicle and was later pulled out and beaten. She also alleged that other party workers were attacked. These allegations have been reported by Congress leaders and have not been independently established.

Regional president Devraj Tamang has rejected allegations that he ordered anyone to attack others. He said the dispute arose over the distribution of active memberships and disagreements about the authority of local and regional party leaders. Tamang said he was preparing to conduct the program when the confrontation began.

Convention process disrupted

The clash took place before the formal nomination process could proceed as planned. Furniture at the venue was also damaged during the confrontation, according to reports.

Security personnel were deployed after the situation became tense. Police later brought the situation under control, while the nomination and election process remained disrupted. Officials had yet to announce when and how the remaining convention procedures would resume.

The dispute comes as Nepali Congress is conducting preparations for its 15th General Convention, with leadership and delegate selection taking place at lower organizational levels across the country.

Chum Narayan Tabadar had announced his candidacy for regional president of Morang-6 several days before Wednesday’s convention.
