Adding and removing VAT
Add VAT takes a price that excludes tax and adds 13% on top — the direction a seller uses when quoting. Remove VAT starts from a tax-inclusive figure such as a printed bill and works back to the pre-tax value.
VAT = price × rate ÷ 100 · pre-tax = inclusive ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
The second formula is the one people get wrong. Removing 13% from a VAT-inclusive Rs 11,300 by subtracting 13% gives Rs 9,831, but the correct pre-tax figure is Rs 10,000 — because the tax was charged on the smaller number, not the larger one.
A rate field is provided because some goods and services are exempt, zero-rated or charged differently. Confirm which applies to your transaction with a registered accountant.
