David Warner’s signing has put Kathmandu Gorkhas in the spotlight ahead of the third season of the Nepal Premier League (NPL), with the Australian opener adding international experience and star power to the capital-based franchise.
The Gorkhas have retained captain Karan KC and several members of their domestic core while bringing in overseas players to strengthen their batting options. Warner’s arrival is among the most high-profile signings of the upcoming tournament, which is scheduled to begin on 26 October 2026.
The franchise has also appointed former Nepal international Sharad Vesawkar as its cricket director, signalling efforts to improve the team’s structure as it looks to make a stronger challenge for the title.

Warner brings international pedigree
Warner is one of Australia’s most accomplished modern-day opening batters. He has represented Australia in all three international formats and was part of teams that won both the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
His experience extends well beyond international cricket. Warner has played in the Indian Premier League and other franchise competitions around the world, making him a significant addition to Kathmandu’s top order.
The Australian’s arrival is also expected to attract attention from Nepali cricket supporters eager to see an internationally recognised player compete in the country’s premier T20 competition.
Kathmandu had been linked with Warner before his signing was confirmed. The franchise eventually secured the deal for Season 3, giving the team a proven batter with experience in high-pressure matches.
Warner’s role at the top of the order could be particularly important as Kathmandu seek to turn their improved performances from the previous season into a deeper run in the tournament.
Overseas signings strengthen the batting options
Alongside Warner, Kathmandu have signed India wicketkeeper-batter KS Bharat and Sri Lankan all-rounder Sahan Arachchige.
Bharat brings wicketkeeping ability and experience from Indian domestic cricket, including Test appearances for India. His presence gives Kathmandu another option in the batting order while providing cover behind the stumps.
Arachchige offers versatility as a batting all-rounder, potentially helping the side balance its middle order and spin-bowling options.
The combination of Warner and Bharat gives Kathmandu additional choices at the top of the order, while Arachchige could contribute in more than one department.
However, the team’s overall balance will depend on how effectively its overseas recruits combine with the retained Nepali players, particularly in the bowling attack.
Kathmandu look to build on last season
Kathmandu Gorkhas represent the capital in the NPL and are one of two franchises from Bagmati Province.
The team’s results have improved across its first two campaigns. Kathmandu finished fifth in the inaugural season, missing out on the playoffs, before reaching the knockout stage in the second edition after finishing third in the league standings.
Their campaign ended in the eliminator, where they lost to Lumbini Lions.
That progress gives the franchise a platform to build on, but a stronger finish will require consistency across the tournament rather than relying solely on individual performances.
The Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur is expected to serve as Kathmandu’s home venue. Familiarity with the conditions could be an advantage, although the team will still need to adapt to different opponents and match situations.
Retained players provide the domestic core
Kathmandu retained six players before the domestic auction, keeping much of the core around captain Karan KC.
The retained group includes batter Bhim Sharki, all-rounders Mohammad Aadil Alam and Santosh Yadav, and bowlers Rashid Khan and Shahab Alam.
These players provide continuity from the previous campaign and give the franchise a foundation around which to integrate its new signings.
The team released Dipesh Kandel ahead of the auction, while its six retentions left room to recruit additional domestic players.
Young players recruited at the auction
Kathmandu signed seven domestic players at the auction, spending a reported total of Rs 17 lakh.
Sahil Patel was the most expensive of the franchise’s auction purchases at Rs 5 lakh. The other six players — Prashiddha Jaishi, Dayanand Mandal, Sonu Devkota, Krishna Paudel, Dev Shah and Suryanshu Koirala — were acquired for Rs 2 lakh each.
The recruitment strategy placed an emphasis on young domestic talent rather than spending heavily on established names during the auction.
With Warner and the other overseas recruits arriving through separate signings, Kathmandu have combined an experienced international presence with a domestic group that will need to contribute consistently throughout the competition.
Bowling remains an area to watch
Kathmandu’s bowling resources include captain Karan KC, Rashid Khan and Shahab Alam, with Aadil Alam providing another option.
Arachchige can also offer support with the ball, particularly in the spin department. The overall balance of the attack, however, will be an important factor in determining how competitive Kathmandu can be against the other seven franchises.
The side will need to find the right combination of pace, spin and all-round options, especially if conditions change during the tournament.
The franchise’s previous overseas players included several cricketers who featured in earlier editions, but Kathmandu have taken a different approach for Season 3 by bringing in new international names.
