Early Life and Democratic Activism

Born in Mahottari district, Thakur entered active politics through the student wing of the Nepali Congress during the late 1950s. After completing his degree in law at Tribhuvan University, he practiced advocacy in Sarlahi while organizing democratic resistance against the autocratic Panchayat system.

His loyalty to democratic reform earned him key leadership positions within the Nepali Congress, serving as Party Treasurer and later holding cabinet portfolios including the Ministry of Science and Technology. He was also elected Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives following the restoration of democracy in 1990.

Transition to Madhesh-Centric Movements

In 2007 (2064 BS), Thakur made a historic political shift. Resigning from his parliamentary and party roles in the Nepali Congress, he formed the Terai Madhesh Loktantrik Party (TMLOP).
